The Rucker Report: Salute To Pat Summitt
by Donna Shana
What’s good people……. this week there was major news in sports….no not the Dwight Howard Saga…… no not the Lebron James Hair Line Scandal …….. no not Anthony Davis Uni brow trending topic …….no not even the guess what video chick your favorite athlete is dating now hoopla … but real sports news out of Knoxville, Tennessee as the Lady Vols Head Coach Pat Summitt stepped down due to health issues in particular early Dementia /Alzheimers. Now for those of you that don’t know Pat Summitt was at the helm for the Lady Vols for almost 40 years and in those near 40 years Pat Summitt alone is the all time winningest coach in collegiate basketball men’s or women’s. Summitt’s teams won 1,098 games, 8 national championships along with a induction into the basketball Hall of Fame in 2000 further cementing her place as one of if not the greatest coaches the game has seen.
For me just growing up a fan of the sport in general you always knew what you would get when watching a Lady Vol game. You would see great team play …… You would see some of the best women’s basketball players to touch the floor (Shout Out to Chamique Holdsclaw!!!!!), You would see a team that truly took on the persona of there coach fiery competitors that would never give up.
Not only is Summitt know for her great teams , but what should not be lost in the chatter is the near 100% graduation rate that she has had with her players over a near 40 year career truly defining the term “student -athlete”. Just think of all the great Tennessee vs. UConn games and how they have help grow the women’s game globally as the two top programs have combined to win 12 of the last 15 national titles. A bitter-sweet day as show by the out-pouring of support she received from the basketball community , however Summitt has a new fight which she says she will approach the same way as she did any game.
So we here at The Rucker Report salute Coach Summitt and the job she has done for the game of basketball. Til next time people…….Be Easy….. You’ve just read The Rucker Report
