Explore Georgia: Weekend Getaway in Jekyll Island
Looking for a quick getaway? Jekyll Island is a great place for a weekend vacation allowing you to explore Georgia. Jekyll Island is located off the coast of Georgia, in Glynn County and offers the most tranquil retreat imaginable. It is one of the Sea Islands and one of the Golden Isles of Georgia.
Jekyll Island has miles of wide open beaches to explore as well as the uniqueness known as Driftwood Beach. Driftwood resembles a tree graveyard as the eroding beach leaves behind beautiful upturned oaks and pines.
I traveled to Jekyll Island for an awards banquet and found amazingly comfortable lodging at the Jekyll Island Hampton Inn & Suites. The spacious rooms and free wifi got me in the door. The free daily hot breakfast and the boardwalk to the beach made my hotel stay most enjoyable.
I came across a variety of places to dine while in Jekyll Island from hotel menus, to white linen restaurants to a laid back Mexican spot. After walking on the beach and being dressed casually, we selected Tortuga Jacks Baja Mexican, Jekyll’s only beachfront restaurant. The open patio, cute atmosphere and decent drinks will have to be enough for you to enjoy and pass the time as the food was not amazing but definitely enjoyable.
Courtyard at Crane was a totally different fine dining experience. Courtyard at Crane is located inside the historic Crane Cottage which was designed in 1917. We got dressed in our fanciest vacation attire and thoroughly enjoyed the extensive dinner menu which highlighted delicious seafood, steaks and pastas. I enjoyed the catch of the day which was wahoo fish served with a collard greens risotto! It was absolutely delicious. I sampled the sweet tea brined pork chop, I shared the grilled Georgia peach, and completely devoured the fried cheesecake, which can all be found above.
