Doing What You Can Locally #HomelessKit
It’s been on my mind for quite some time to give back. I have always wanted to volunteer and donate clothes- but I just never
have find the time to make it happen. Well this year, I reached out to my various circles asking for any assistance in giving back. In the past I’ve organized a coat drive as well as a toy drive, but this year I wanted to focus on the homeless. Then, right on time- as if a sign from God, I saw two genius ideas on Facebook centered around the homeless. One of the ideas was called a blessing bag. Various people across the world stuffed ziplock bags and filled them with snacks, toiletries and any useful items they thought would be helpful. And the other idea was handbags for homeless women. This idea was to take your handbags that you no longer use and fill them with toiletries and women specific products. How cool, right? Well the idea for the handbags is to keep them in your car and whenever you see a homeless woman who may or may not be asking for help, to give her one of your bags.
So after surveying my different circles, my co- workers were the first to jump on the ‘Donna’s at it again train.” They were almost as excited as I was to have the opportunity to give back. All I knew was that I wanted to be able to make a ton of bags and to fill them with as much stuff as possible. I collected money from all who were willing to give, and we even got a donation for the shampoo and conditioner from a local hotel. One of my co workers travels frequently and donated a box full of lotions and soaps that we were able to use as well. With the money we collected we bought- toothpaste and toothbrushes, wet wipes, bread, bologna, cheese, ziploc bags, sandwich bags, water, chips, cheese peanut butter crackers, fruit snacks, granola bars and mayo packs. My husband even showed his support and bought the socks!
My co workers and I spent a few hours on Friday and got it done! We made sandwiches and worked in an assembly line to get the bags finished. Awesome team work by the crew.
Hubby and I hit the streets Saturday morning to hopefully bless some homeless people. At first we were just kinda jumping in and out of the car for one and two people. But after about an hour we found a huge crowd of people that were in need. They were very eager to receive our bags and we here happy to pass them out.
This has been one of the best feelings, being able to give back and expect nothing in return. I pray these bags bless the recipients because this effort was truly from the heart. I’m hoping that in another couple of weeks we are able to repeat this mission right before Christmas. If you want to donate to this vision- please email me and let me know. I would love any help or donations that you are willing to provide.
Thank you, thank you, thank you and THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE THAT DONATED!!!! THERE IS NO WAY I COULD HAVE PULLED THIS OFF ALONE!
