So you want to become a blogger?
There isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t get a message or email from a friend or associate that has discovered a desire to create a blog! Usually the individual has no clue of how to get started and that’s typically why they are contacting me. Well, let me tell you that blogging is not for the weak. It’s a lot of work. And it more than likely won’t be an overnight success. In preparation for the blogging meeting I am having with a friend this week, I decided I should really prepare some of the good and the bad, the pros and the cons and just some basic information hoping to give her a little insight as to what she is in for as she steps into the blogging world.
First, you have to answer why do you want to start a blog.
Is it for recreation or business? If it is for recreation, then kudos! Blog away for your friends and family and enjoy yourself. Blogging is a great way to express yourself online and to share your perspective about whatever you choose. But if you are starting a blog to be a business, you know to make money- then it can be done but it won’t happen over night. There are millions of blogs on the web and hundreds of thousands are being created every single day.
Now that we know why you want to blog, you have to pick a niche. A subject matter if you will. My blog is a lifestyle blog, which gives me the freedom to write about a variety of subjects. What kind of blog will you have? Beauty? Entertainment? Mommy? Choosing a subject matter will be very important as your blog begins to grow. You will get offers for many products or services and if it doesn’t fit your blog and your audience, then it won’t make sense to take the product or opportunity.
Running a Blog
You have to be diligent and consistent on your own. You have to be willing to create unique content. If you are thinking of starting an entertainment blog, or celeb gossip- what information are you going to provide your readers that Worldstar, B. Scott and People Magazine haven’t already provided. How will you verify the information you are posting? Where are you getting your pictures from? I know may bloggers who have gotten cease and desist or even been sued for using copy written images. If you create a beauty blog, you have to be willing to create videos and tutorials- same as with a hair blog. A lot of the successful beauty and hair bloggers, are great teachers. They give you step by step tutorials on how to recreate their looks. They are always trying new products, new colors, new methods to improve their audiences experiences.
Imagine, writing what you feel like is a great blog post and you share it on your blog. Then you share it on your social media channels. Yes, you will need to have a consistent social media presence on all platforms- you are your own marketing team. You want to drive as many people to your site as possible, right? All your friends are going to share your blog post, everyday right? WRONG! What I know to be true with everyone in my blog circle is that we all get more support from strangers than our own friends and family, and it’s ok. You will learn that you can’t depend on anyone but yourself to share your new blog with the world. If you come up with amazing fresh and new content, it is up to you to share it!
*** Let me pause and just say that this may sound negative, but it’s the reality of it. I just know that so many people who start blogs and quit. I meet people at events who have actually heard of my site and they tell me how they too are going to start blogging. I can name 5 people that I personally helped start a blog answering questions and offering advice. Most of them go for about 2 months, then the next thing I know their website/blog has disappeared from the web-asphere. So bear with me, through some of the less flattering moments of blogging.
I think this is a great place to stop and let you all marinate on the points I’ve listed so far. Blogging can be really fun once you find your groove and began to reap the benefits of your hard work. Stay tuned for my next post which will focus on the Content and Consistency of your blog as well as the design and how to selecting an online identity.
